3D Modelling Tools:

If you want to have a go at modelling yourself or need to convert and/or adjust models from third parties then the following free modelling tools can be used. They each have different stengths and weaknesses.

In general, any 3D modelling tool that can export data that can be imported into Blender for conversion can be used (e.g. using ISO VRML, OBJ, 3DS, or COLLADA/DAE as input format to Blender). The most commonly used commercial tools are Maya and 3D Studio Max from Autodesk. Autodesk offers one year free access to many of their tools to students, if you register with them. SketchUp Pro from Trimble is also a popular commercial 3D modelling tool, however the student version is not free.
